Last year, the state announced plans to invest $18 million to improve trails, bridges, and stairs at Starved Rock State Park. That plan is officially being carried out.
As of Tuesday, some trails are closed at various times until mid-March for tree removal. The closures will change daily, and park visitors should plan to stop by the visitors center to confirm which trails at Starved Rock are open and closed on any given day. Hikers that come upon caution tape and signage blocking a trail should stop and turn around.
Park improvements are expected to continue through most of this year. Construction work will be staggered, minimizing the number of trails affected at any given time.
During improvements, the park, Starved Rock Lodge, and other amenities will stay open.
