REVERSING THE EXODUS:
Strategies for Attracting & Retaining Young Adults
Did you know that every May, North Central Illinois will graduate more than 1,600 high school seniors. Unfortunately, many will leave the area. In fact, almost every rural county in Illinois has experienced an outmigration of its youngest and brightest talent and unfortunately, the trend appears to be continuing. “There are so many things that are impacted by the outmigration of young adults from rural communities, including school enrollment, availability of quality health care, future leadership, a skilled workforce, and business development” according to the presenter Pam Schallhorn.
This presentation will include insight from several local young individuals that may play a critical role in developing strategic plans to address outmigration and to attract young adults back to rural our communities.

Pam Schallhorn, University of Illinois Extension Specialist, will discuss several research-based strategies that communities can implement now to help reverse the trend, including insights into how remote work may provide more opportunities for people to return to their community. Pamela Beckett, Founder of the Starved Rock Country Community Foundation, will talk about one potential strategy, the Welcome Home Scholarship.
